About Toby & Molly Music
The story of Toby and Molly Music began in the early 1970s in Shepherd, MI. “My father’s love of horses led to the purchase of his first team, Toby and Molly,” reflects publishing company co-founder Robert Filhart. “I don’t remember what type of horse Toby was, however legend has it that Molly had been a wild horse, who was eventually put up for auction. That’s where my dad, Ed stepped in and brought her home.” After that first team, the Filharts solely bred Belgian Draft Horses on their 100-acre farm, with over a dozen calling the Filhart Farm home. While their family still raises them, Ed Filhart has since retired, selling his last team in 2018.
The moment that inspired the name and logo of the Nashville-based publishing company originated from a photo capturing Toby and Molly walking together, with Ed leading. “The photo of my dad walking between them hung on our family home’s front porch as long as I can remember,” recalls Filhart. “It was taken by a lifelong friend of the family and represents the balance, patience and work ethic we should all strive to achieve in life.”
Toby and Molly Music’s mission is to nurture and encourage young writers and artists to help them realize their full creative potential while supporting them every step along the way.
“It’s not easy,” says the veteran publishing executive. “Success as a songwriter involves a lot of people to help realize that dream. It takes friends to lean on during difficult times. It takes a lot of hard work. For me, all of these attributes are recognized in that photo from so long ago.”
Toby and Molly Music was established in 2019 as a joint venture among Morris Higham Management President Clint Higham, Kobalt Music and Filhart to create unique opportunities for writer/artist-friendly deals.
“To everyone that has helped Toby and Molly Music realize our dream, thank you,” Filhart shares with gratitude. “This isn’t the finish line…we’re just getting started.
